Sam Bergin, President of MacServ IT recently attended the trade show, DattoCon16, hosted by Datto in Nashville, TN. The focus was disaster recovery and business continuity. They specialize in creating products that provide the ability to get servers back up and running within minutes instead of days (or longer…)
While a backup is critical, it doesn’t help you if you can’t get your business back up and running quickly.
The biggest downside to cloud backup is that restoring a large data set over the internet can take days. (That’s assuming you still have a network to restore to). Datto sells an onsite appliance that is able to “spin up” a virtualized image of the server in its most recent backed-up state, without the need for a computer to run it on, in under a minute. Should a disaster occur (theft, fire, flood, etc), there’s a cloud option that can “spin up” your server within their data center, so that users can connect over the internet to access their files. All in all, a very clever and almost bulletproof way to keep a business running during difficult times.
Datto’s product was primarily aimed at the Windows market, however they have introduced a new Mac agent, with the intention of providing similar protection to Mac servers and workstations. MacServ will be testing the Mac agent in the coming weeks and also working more closely with the Windows product so that we can offer it to both platforms when it seems to be an appropriate solution for our clients.
